The Mystery of Claude Maus

Lead-Image

There are endless debates over art versus fashion, whether one fits into the other; and occasionally, a designer appears to blur these lines and approaches their work with an artist’s fervor. Claude Maus was born as a pseudonym for the Melbourne-based fine artist and graphic designer, Rob Maniscalco. In 1999 his work evolved into a fashion label and since this point has become a household name amongst a sub-culture of discerning followers across the globe.

Deep, dark, mysterious and understated would be my first words to describe the thematic collections produced by Maniscalco. Over the years the aesthetic has become more organic and texturally rich, with a focus on classic tailoring, quality fabrics and combinations. Representing a distinctly darker side to fashion, there is an aversion to mainstream/popular culture here, which is refreshing and original.

The most recent collection embodies these aesthetics, with further experimentation on cut and shape. The mix of leathers, fine silk satins and soft jerseys once again add a lush yet almost pre-historical feeling. Asymmetry is paramount here, matching trends seen most recently in Paris (the label showed there recently) which gives us hope for a fashion-forward thinking future.
