Salasai: Don’t rug up, rock out!
Salasai’s signature androgynous look has introduced itself to the mod rock era of the sixties this winter. This experimental relationship has manifested itself as voluminous dresses printed with newspaper clippings and iconic imagery from the sixties. The collection – appropriately entitled Blu Collar Lovers – reminisces on the time when classless fashion became the chosen form of fashion for a whole society. Elegant crushed velvet and wool suiting mingle with the seductive satin and lace of the rambunctious street style fashions that revolutionized nightwear, turning it into statement daywear. Knitwear also makes a well received debut, offering sumptuous over-sized dresses and cardigans to ensure winter is not only warm, it’s hot hot hot.
This texturally rich range doesn’t end the redefined classless look there though. Even the colourways are a harmonious storm of symbolic contradiction. Bold firebrick reds boast the provocative spirit of the sixties while royal blues hark back to the aristocratical class regime. Sleek blacks and winter whites sit neutrally in between ensuring the look is entirely modern.
The shapes evolved from the idea of a blank canvas to display cultural references upon. Designer, Kirsha Whitcher, left just enough room for the head and the arms to poke through into day light, literally swathing us in the iconic culture of the swinging, swanky, shift dress ruled sixties. Mind you these are shift dresses with a contemporary twist: extended proportions. The iconic sixties are being made iconic again. Idolisation without imitation is the key to this new age look.
No great sixties look was ever complete though without the accessories to match. Kirsha decided that neither was the Salasai winter look. Footwear designer Chaos and Harmony and accessories label Commence came on board to ensure each look is a fait accompli.
Salasai has garnered a strong following for their unapologetically androgynous clothing, which idolizes heroines such as Grace Jones, Nennah Cherry and Madonna. This winter introduces new references to Vanessa Paradis and Bridgette Bardot who epitomized evocative chic. Sounds like the perfect woman, a woman of fresh modern style that never discards a good tradition.
Salasai has made it possible for us to wear the essence of all these fabulous woman in one totally outrageously yet tasteful garment. Or several of them if you’re feeling extra cold…or extra bold.
There is no shortage of statement making choices in this winter range. It’s top to toe pop culture-inspired wear that pops all on its own.
