The Drifter and the Gypsy

Soft focus photos that play on light and shadow are a regular feature on The Drifter and the Gypsy.  Light is as much a subject of the photography as the model.  With posts that evoke a sense of nostalgia from the laces and vintage pieces featured, blogger Micaela has created a world where the reader can dream.  Based in San Francisco, Micaela kindly let Tangent Digital into her whimsical world.

Tangent Digital: Tell us about yourself.

Micaela: I’m a girl of a whimsical nature who loves fashion, but doesn’t take it seriously.  I prefer lookbooks and editorials over runway fashion; to me, they are much more beautiful.  Aside from blogging, I like to daydream, design, and take pictures.

TD: Is fashion art? guestpost1

M: Yes, fashion is art!  Fashion reflects peoples’ personalities.  Painters and photographers express how they’re feeling by the art they create, so why can’t fashion be the same?

TD: What inspired you to start a blog?  What inspires your content?

guestpost2M: I stumbled upon other inspiration blogs in early autumn of ’08 and thought to myself ‘I can totally do something like this!’  I started my blog in November of 2008 without actually having a direction.  Since then, it has evolved into a collection of all aspects of art, including fashion, interior design, and photography.  My content is inspired by SO MUCH.  When I come across an artist I really like, I tend to follow his/her work and include it in my blog.  I’ve also discovered some beautiful artwork through people emailing me links to their work.  And occasionally, I go on blogging marathons, clicking on various links from different blogs and websites, and saving a bunch of posts at once.

TD: Describe your personal style.

M: I have a very simple style, inspired by nature and vintage.  I feel my blog perfectly reflects my personality.  It’s a cross between whimsical, girly, bohemian, and classic.guestpost3

TD: What makes vintage special?

M: Well the most obvious answer is you can be completely unique since you won’t have to worry about other people having the same shirt/dress/skirt/etc. as you.  Some people think that it’s dirty to wear secondhand clothes, but I think it’s quite fun to imagine what type of people owned the clothing before you.  I like to make up back-stories about the peoples’ lives.

TD: Whose designs (past or contemporary) do you covet?

M: I don’t follow fashion too much, but some indie shops I currently like are Makool Loves You, Nadinoo, and Sublet Clothing.guestpost4

TD: Celebrity, designer or model – do you have a person in particular whose style do you admire?

M: I love Audrey Hepburn, especially in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; she’s so effortlessly elegant.  I also really like Zooey Deschanel’s cute and quirky style.
