Nars Cosmetics: 15 Years of Fabulous!
As the cosmetics world celebrates the NARS 15 year anniversary, lotions, potions (shimmering ‘NARS body glow’ to boot!) I have chosen to highlight the life and loves of François Nars- the man behind the name behind the brand!
From his earliest ‘loaded brush stroke’d’ steps into beautyland Francois Nars wowed the fashion world with his skill, expertise, excellence and keen eye for detail. Arriving in new York in 1984 fresh from the Carita Makeup School in Paris, François fast proved himself to be ‘the next big thing’ in makeup, almost instantly forming collaborations with many of the fashion, film and music worlds royalty. Fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Sui, Versace and Valentino (among many others daaahlink!) flocked to work with the hot new makeup protégé, as did the cream of both the film and music industries such as Madonna, Sharon Stone, Lauren Hutton, Michelle Pfeiffer and Catherine Deneuve.
Living the life ‘fantastic’ was simply not enough for Francois so In 1994, frustrated by the lack of interesting cosmetics lines available, François saw an opening in the cosmetics industry and N ‘the brand’ was born. First off the rank was a small collection of twelve lipsticks launched at Barneys New York (as you do!). So exquisite were his colors and textures that demand for his product went through the roof and the brand exploded onto the global market. By 1996 François introduced the first NARS advertising campaign to the who’s who of the beauty and fashion world (but wait- there’s more!!) not only did he design the product- the fabulous Mr. Nars turned photographer- and shot the product too! Francois’s unique style of photography was recognized immediately, and he continues to shoot all NARS advertising campaigns to this day.
The ‘What’s hot’ list as told by François Nars
All time favorites ‘eye’ look to date?
Prominent Eyes/False Lashes: “Twenty years ago, when I worked a lot with Steven Meisel, I brought back a very 1950s and 1960′s eye liner effect. That was a time when you wouldn’t see many false eyelashes. Mascara, yes–lashes, no”.
Favorite eye makeup?
“ I like the dustiness of the NARS Cosmetics Brume Eye Shadow Duo. It almost looks bad in the pan, but on, it looks foggish and fantastic. It makes the eye pop, particularly if you have light eyes. Strong, obvious colors don’t necessarily do that”.
Favorite Red lip?
“NARS Cosmetics Semi Matte Lipstick in # Jungle Red is my favorite. Even if it stops selling, it should remain. That name is so iconic because of the movie The Woman. NARS is the only one with that name. Jungle Red Lipstick launched with the original 12 NARS lipstick shades at Barneys, which were the original pieces of the line. It is a signature NARS red–stocked with rich, intense pigment and a semi-matte finish, it is a classic, perfect crimson.”
Tips to a ‘great’ lip?
“I stay away from rules. Rules get boring. You know? Too cliché. You can do a smokey eye and a red lip. It reminds me of the Helmut Newton photos from late 1970s early 1980s. There was no blush, just a deep-hued eye and strong lip. Helmut didn’t like blush. The application is all about the way you adapt it. Some women look better with a pale lip, so it’s more about what the woman individually can get away with. Get creative. Makeup is a way of expressing yourself. Try something else in front of the mirror. Simple as that. It’s my goal to give women more freedom”
Most used makeup item?
“NARS Cosmetics Satin Lipstick in # Honolulu Honey. This beigey-nude shade has been used in countless shoots, shows and ads. This shade also launched with the original 12 shades at Barneys. It is a perfect warm nude because it has just the right amount of yellow and pink. The combination of shades along with its sheer finish makes it ideal for all skin tones.”
OOO laaa Nar-s! We salute you!
Till Next time dear Tangentines…
Sweet beauty dreams!!!
