The Trophy Cabinet

Hello Tange-artists! Sami here and I will be (with your permission) taking you on an exciting artistic journey via the Tangent Arts blog… It is a baton that has been graciously passed on by the beautiful and ever so talented Fernanda and I hope to run with it with the same gusto… So lets start off with a little jog ’round the corner to a little gallery called Kaleidoscope and check out the latest group show: Black Line Collection.

At first glance the show is brimming with graphically produced images, black bold lines and saturated hues and it is clear that this collection of 10 artists  have been specially selected for their unique talents.

Madeleine Cruise‘s Bull Dust, a brightly coloured large scale piece is the first to grab your attention… its drama and ambiguity awash with pretty pastels and peachy pinks. This juxtaposition is complimented by You Promised by Carla Gee -Schneider; a collection of childrens’ soft toys that seem to have been ‘operated’ on, their innards spewing out and sewn back together with pink thread and ‘macabre cuteness’.

These works sit comfortably alongside works by the likes of the uber talented Tim Andrew and Steven Nuttall; their wide eyed and opened mouthed girls and protruding ‘moosecorn’ heads, respectively, demanding attention with a dash of cheekiness.

As you navigate around more works in the show, there is another common thread that binds these works.  All seem to be trophies of one kind or another, celebrations in form, technique, even irony.  The bold monochromatic imagery in Simon Currie‘s Underbelly complimented by the overt satire of TEZ‘s coat -of -arms inspired Hijacked to use as examples. Both artists have quite a following in the art scene and it isnt hard to see why.

Yet there are subtleties that lie amidst these ‘boldies’, beautiful expressions of line and image, found in the works by, Susie Fraser, Jess Lawson and Mim Montgomery.  All three artists’ smaller scale pieces are grouped together in beautiful harmony.  All indicative of sweet expressions of people, places and things so coveted in their intimacies. (As a side note- I was pleased to have been able to snap up one of Mim’s beautiful pen drawings before anyone else got to it!).

If I could be so bold in saying – this is a show that you shouldn’t miss… (*wipes away a tear of pride*)

till next time… Sami x
