Being Born Again Couture, Again Part II

The concept of art and fashion joining visual forces in such a versatile nature on one runway has enticed us to the point where we just can’t stop talking about it!

In case you missed it the first time round Being Born Again Couture is a one night event where well known Australian Designers and ten Australian artists have teamed up to bring the best of their creativity together in one incredible one off garment.

The women behind the event are Emily Fitzgerald and Davina Reichman, two passionate fashion entrepreneurs with an art/fashion vision of their own, D&EM Couture. Their vision has invigorated the creativity of others and compelled them to unite their own visions with likeminded creative’s. Textiles will be a malleable canvas and the result will be a kaleidoscope of colour and texture.

Here is what some more of the designers and artists involved had to say about their collaboration for Being Born Again Couture.

Dhini and Pat Brassington

Dhini’s tailored garments, filled with a feminine strength, will combine with the surreal nature of Pat Brassington’s intimate photographic works to make the viewer think a little more deeply.

Dhini

TM:How would you describe the creative process of creating this garment?

D: I feel the artwork has allowed me to explore colour, form and interpretation in a different way from my usual methods. So it has allowed me to develop more deeply.

TM:What do you see the role of art in fashion as?

D: I feel art can play a huge role in inspiring fashion in terms of form, colour, direction and concept.

Pat Brassington

TM:How would you describe the creative process of creating this garment?

PB: I think Dhini saw elements in my image ‘Forget your perfect offering’ translating well to fashion.
Dhini also looked at other works as well to get an overall sense of what she could interpret into her design. The ambiguity of form – leading to sexual references – and ambiguity of gender too in many of my images offered up exciting possibilities.

TM: What do you see the role of art in fashion as?

PB: A few decades ago it was a widely held view that art led fashion. These days it could be said that there is more often than not, an interconnectedness between art and fashion, most notably in the courting of the new and of chance and of the sensational. The cult of the individual, of the distinctive, stalks the contemporary artist and the fashion designer.

Tim O’Connor and Debra Dawes

Tim O’Connor and Debra Dawes love of simplicity will combine into a sensual garment with a mesmerizing tonal and geometric pattern.

TM: How would you describe the design process of the garment?

TO: My garment has devolved from Debra’s work through the geometry of her work being re-interpreted onto fabric. Using a simple yet flattering shape on the body and using a beautifully beaded and tonal design.

TM: What do you see the role of art in fashion as?

TO: Art plays a crucial part in fashion in the form of colour, texture, light reflective surfaces and pattern that all go into creating.

Debra Dawes

TM: How would you describe the design process of the garment?

DD: One of mutual admiration.

TM: What do you see the role of art in fashion as?

DD: I am supportive of human creativity in all its manifestations.

Marnie Skillings

marnie_tracey

TM: How has your garment developed from the chosen artworks?

MS: Tracey Mofatt and I took inspiration for the invocations series and used the textures and colour palette to create our dress and neckpiece.

TM: What do you see the role of art in fashion as?

MS: What ever you want it too be… inspiration, partner, participant…

So there you have it art and fashion walking hand in hand just the way they were meant to.

The personalities of the event are vibrant and when their creative flare combines the results are sure to be explosive!
