The Eleventh Commandment revealed
The Ten Commandments are familiar to every one of us, even if we don’t practice them religiously, but The Eleventh Commandment is the one we cannot ignore, “Thou shalt dress with tremendous amounts of style and be furiously good looking.”
This sacred commandment was handed down to Moses, along with the other ten, under estimating its power he practiced it with the utmost diligence until one of its alter egos, the seventh deadly sin, envy, maliciously silenced it.
So the Eleventh Commandment was made secret until Moses met Henry Holland and Josh Oldfield and these words were rightfully immortalized in the charismatic threads of their namesake label.
The Sydney based women’s and menswear label is extremely serious about their divine calling to uphold this commandment though they don’t take themselves too seriously at all. In fact, their often tongue in cheek prints and subtly satirical approach to popular culture decrees quite the opposite attitude.
Henry’s calling took place somewhere in a small restaurant in Mexico, failing to find a stone tableau, he drew the first sketch of the Questifix, The Eleventh Commandment symbol, on the tablecloth. Upon his return to Australia he broke bread and drank wine, (more on this special wine later,) with Josh and together the two disciples set out on one extremely long style journey. “Neither of us had any formal fashion training so we have had to learn everything the hard way, which has been both challenging and rewarding.”
This Summer see’s the boys make their most profound style statement so far, Made in Space, a one-hundred and twenty piece collection comprised of stylish treasures in fabrics such as jersey, nylon, modal, drill, viscose and elastane.
Their signature denim threads include a combination of jeans and shorts in premium stretch and rigid denims complete with their ingenious reinforced crotches in all men’s denim pieces because as Henry so eloquently puts it, “any denim aficionado will know what it’s like to break a pair of jeans in so they fit you perfectly, only to have them tear through the crotch.” And let’s face it there is nothing stylish about indecent exposure.
The Eleventh Commandment covers it all from comfort to cut and the all important art of embellishment. No collection would be complete without their literal and graphic art based, mainly music inspired prints, though like all good men, Henry and Josh do not discriminate drawing inspiration from “anyone that is achieving something unique in any creative field.” Previous mortals to receive the boy’s textile seal of approval include the likes of Busy P, David Bowie and Digitalism.
This summer their Did I Do That drawing of Steve Urkel print is set to be a profound style declaration alongside the premium modal Toast Cut tee and for the ladies the versatile Delirium dress and Cheshire Bodysuit promise to be winners.
The Eleventh Commandment are truly practicing what they preach this summer, that style is a language, one that at its most divine standards is universally understood. This motto was also realized on Henry’s holy style pilgrimage. “When I went traveling occasionally someone would come up to me or I would approach someone and even though we couldn’t speak the same language we would indicate that we liked each others style. That was our common language.”
The boys have certainly ensured their new collection in all its almightiness offers something heaven worthy for everyone.
But enough ranting and raving from me…lets hear it from the messenger himself.
Tangent: What makes great fashion in your divine opinion?
Henry: Any clothes that make you feel good are good fashion. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
Tangent: If the summer collection had a soundtrack what would it be?
Henry- Probably Yeasayer – Odd Blood, seeing as we’ve been spinning that relentlessly.
Tangent: What other style commandments would you write into the fashion bible if you could?
Henry: My main qualm, which won’t be very popular with a lot of girls, is that I’m quite anti heels. Girls think they look so sexy in them but most of the time guys are just hoping girls won’t fall over in them and wishing they would hurry up and stop complaining that they hurt. The most attractive girls are the ones that look comfortable and effortless.
Tangent: Tastefully speaking what is the most unforgettable movie?
Henry: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Tangent: Soundtrack of the moment?
Henry: The Cure – Lullaby
Tangent: Person worthy of Idolization?
Henry: No one. Putting anything on a pedestal can only end badly.
(Tangent: The boy is a true commandment follower after all. Number two is, “thou shalt not idolize..” just testing)
Tangent: Coffee or tea?
Henry: Tea, but I’m also a fiend for a vanilla milkshake. Seriously they are like crack to me.
Tangent: Wine or beer?
Henry: Wine. I am a founding member of a music appreciation society called Wi Chi Chi, which stands for Wine Cheese and Choons. We are kind of like the Stonecutters but we don’t have a sacred parchment. We do have rules, however, and if you break the rules you have to do an interpretive dance. Wi Chi Chi is a big influence on this Made in Space range, as you can tell with both the Wi Chi Chinos and the ‘Wi Chi Chi’ featuring on our Definition print.
I told you there would be more about that wine. A holy drop indeed.
