Tangent Magazine interview with Mr. Newton

What do you hunt for in your subjects?

I like shooting real girls. I like casual chic – denim cut-offs, a cute floral blouse and a huge floppy hat would be a look that I would find exciting to shoot. I also look for girls who are physically attractive – perhaps not in a ‘drop-dead gorgeous’ sort of way, so much as in a cute and girly sort of way.

Who has been your favorite subject?

My favorite subjects are always the ‘girls next door’. I prefer the young and stylish and trendy – the vintage shoppers and the high street shoppers and the fashion students – rather than models or fashion editors or celebs. I also sometimes like to shoot my fellow bloggers – people like Tavi, Hanneli, and Garance are always favorites of mine.

Do you take ‘no’ for an answer?

Rarely. If things start to turn a bit angry and awkward – then I know it’s time to give up. I’m quite persistent – sometimes even pushy – as there are relatively few people who are worth shooting. Once I spot someone who is worthwhile, I’ve failed in my job if I can’t find a way to convince them to stop and pose. Being resourceful and persistent is crucial to getting great street style photos – you can’t just settle for what comes easy.

Finish these sentences:

Paris is… burning.

Milan is… difficult to navigate.

London is… brilliant!

New York is… where dreams come true.

Who would be your next ideal subject?

I would love to get a nice shot of Daphne Guinness. She’s one of my favorite street style subjects but is never really thrilled with posing – so I’ve yet to get a shot of her that I really love.
